Montgomery, IL – An elderly Montgomery man and his dog were found dead following a Sunday morning house fire in unincorporated Oswego Township, prompting an ongoing multi-agency investigation.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly before 6:30 a.m. to the 30 block of Fernwood Road to assist the Oswego Fire Protection District with a residential fire. Firefighters located the bodies of 86-year-old David Farber and his dog inside the home after extinguishing the blaze.

Authorities said the fire was first reported as smoke seen coming from the residence. Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed it was a working house fire and entered the home to search for occupants. Both Farber and his dog were declared deceased at the scene.

The cause and manner of death remain undetermined, pending results from a forensic autopsy and toxicological testing conducted by the Kendall County Coroner’s Office on Monday. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene and gather evidence in collaboration with the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

No preliminary cause for the fire has been released. Officials have not indicated any suspicion of foul play but said the case remains active and ongoing.

This incident marks a tragic loss for the Oswego-area community and serves as a reminder of the importance of home fire safety measures, including the use of working smoke detectors and fire preparedness plans.
