Oswego, NY – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Oswego County, with forecasters warning of potentially dangerous lake effect snow beginning late Wednesday night and continuing through Saturday morning, just as Thanksgiving travel peaks across Central New York.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, heavy lake effect snow is possible, with accumulations exceeding 7 inches in the most persistent snow bands. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow and even whiteout conditions in open areas.
The agency cautions that travel could become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially for motorists driving during the holiday rush. “Whiteout conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous,” the NWS warned, urging drivers to use extra caution and prepare for slippery roads.
Localized snow bands could bring rapidly changing road conditions and reduced visibility, making timing and route planning essential for those traveling for Thanksgiving.
Residents are advised to stay alert for forecast updates as the storm approaches and to plan ahead for possible travel disruptions.
