Melbourne, Fla. – Central Florida residents should brace for a hot, stormy Tuesday, with heat index values climbing as high as 106 degrees and a moderate rip current risk at all Atlantic beaches from the Treasure Coast through Daytona Beach. Afternoon storms could bring lightning, gusts up to 50 mph, and heavy downpours, making travel and outdoor activities hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, scattered to numerous showers and storms are likely after midday, with rain chances between 50% and 70% across the region. Orlando, Leesburg, and Vero Beach can expect the most widespread coverage, while Melbourne and Daytona Beach could see more spotty activity. Officials urge beachgoers to heed lifeguard warnings, as breaking waves of 2 to 3 feet could produce dangerous rip currents capable of pulling swimmers into deeper water.

Tropical Storm Erin remains far out in the Atlantic, moving westward. It is too early to determine if any impacts will reach Florida, but forecasters note we are now in the peak of hurricane season and preparedness is key.
