Orlando, Fla. – Large hail and damaging wind gusts could impact much of east central Florida this afternoon, especially areas south of a Lake Kissimmee-to-Melbourne line, as strong thunderstorms develop between 3 and 9 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Level 1 risk for severe weather includes coin-sized hail, wind gusts up to 55 mph, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Areas from Kissimmee to Stuart face the highest threat, with a 5–15% chance of hail reaching 1.5 inches and winds nearing 60 mph.
Orlando, Leesburg, and Sanford could see highs in the mid-90s with a 40–50% chance of afternoon storms. In Okeechobee and Melbourne, rain chances reach 60% amid temps in the low 90s. Lightning and downed branches may disrupt outdoor events and travel during peak evening hours.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, avoid outdoor activity during storms, and secure loose items. Charge mobile devices and follow alerts from local emergency officials.
The storm threat is expected to taper by late evening, but additional advisories are possible if conditions intensify. Stay tuned to local updates through the evening.
