Melbourne, FL – Central Florida residents face stormy conditions today, along with a dangerous rip current warning along the Atlantic coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, drier northern air is pushing into the region, reducing overall rain chances slightly. Still, the strongest storms are expected across the Treasure Coast to Lake Okeechobee and inland areas this afternoon and evening. These storms could produce gusts up to 55 mph, small hail, lightning, and heavy rainfall that may trigger minor flooding.
Temperatures will peak in the mid-90s inland, with upper-80s along the coast. Sea breezes are expected to trigger additional storm development later in the day.
Forecasters warn of a high risk of life-threatening rip currents at all Central Florida Atlantic beaches. Long-period swells from distant Hurricane Gabrielle are fueling rough surf, making it especially dangerous near inlets during outgoing tides. Officials strongly advise against entering the water.
Meanwhile, a tropical wave moving into The Bahamas has an 80% chance of development over the next week, though it currently poses no threat to Florida. Residents are urged to stay prepared and monitor forecasts in case conditions change.
