Melbourne, Fla. – Central Florida heads into the holiday weekend with an elevated risk of storms and dangerous beach conditions. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms will bring frequent lightning, gusty winds up to 50 mph, and heavy downpours across the region through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, rain chances climb to 70–80% starting Friday, with the highest coverage expected inland before storms drift back toward the coast by evening. Localized flooding is possible, with rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches in some neighborhoods.

Along the beaches, rip currents remain a concern from Volusia County south through the Treasure Coast. Lifeguards are urging swimmers to stay in supervised areas and never enter the water alone. Even with sunny skies, a 2-foot surf can generate dangerous rip currents capable of pulling swimmers offshore.

Travelers and residents should expect delays on major roads during afternoon storms, particularly along I-4 and I-95, where reduced visibility and ponding on roadways are likely. Boaters should use caution as lightning strikes will be frequent near the coast.

Storm chances stay high through the Labor Day holiday, with conditions remaining humid and stormy until early next week.
