MELBOURNE, Fla. – Central Florida is facing a triple threat Thursday as dangerous heat, strong afternoon storms, and hazardous beach conditions converge across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, temperatures will climb into the mid-90s with heat index values ranging from 102 to 107 degrees, creating a high risk of heat-related illness. Scattered storms will provide only delayed relief, developing between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. with the strongest activity expected near Orlando, Titusville, and Melbourne. Forecasters warn of gusty winds up to 45 mph, frequent lightning, and localized flooding in heavy downpours.

Along the coast, Hurricane Erin — now well north of Florida — is still generating large swells that are impacting east-central beaches. A high risk for life-threatening rip currents remains in effect through the weekend, along with a High Surf Advisory for breakers reaching up to 7 feet. Small craft advisories are also posted, with seas building 5 to 9 feet offshore.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat, and use caution on area roads during storms. Beachgoers should avoid swimming due to dangerous rip currents.

Hazards are expected to continue into the weekend as heat and surf advisories remain in effect.
