Orland Park, IL – The Orland Park Police Department has launched an advanced drone initiative designed to respond to emergencies before officers arrive, marking a major milestone in the village’s public safety efforts.
According to the department, the new Drones as First Responders (DFR) program enables drones to be dispatched directly to 911 calls, streaming live aerial video to help officers assess situations faster and more safely.
“This represents a major leap forward in how we respond to emergencies,” said Orland Park Mayor Jim Dodge. “It’s a game-changer for public safety and another example of Orland Park leading the way in innovative policing.”
Police Chief Eric Rossi noted that the department had used drones previously for investigations, but the DFR system flips that model—sending drones immediately when a call is received. The average drone response time is just 70 seconds, enabling faster intelligence gathering during emergencies.
The program uses BRINC Responder drones, equipped with obstacle avoidance, two-way communication, red and blue emergency lights, and a 42-minute flight time. The drones can reach speeds of up to 45 mph within a two-mile range and can even deliver emergency equipment like AEDs.
With 117 sworn officers and 21 FAA-certified drone pilots, Orland Park is one of Illinois’ most drone-capable police departments. Officials say the drones have already been deployed dozens of times in recent years to assist with incidents and missing-person searches.
“This strengthens our ability to fight crime and protect our community,” Rossi said. “It reinforces our commitment to forward-thinking public safety.”
