Orland Park, Ill. – A fast-moving grass fire ignited just before 3 p.m. Thursday, scorching five acres near 162nd Street and Will Cook Road and sending thick black smoke into the sky just yards from nearby homes.
According to the Orland Fire Protection District, firefighters quickly responded to the scene and were able to contain the blaze before it spread further into residential areas. Lockport and Oak Forest departments assisted with the response.
Crews worked against windy conditions and dry brush, which intensified the flames near a cluster of trees bordering the neighborhood. Residents reported seeing flames within feet of backyard fences. No injuries or structural damage were reported.
The fire marked a potential final call for Chief Schofield, who led the operation and may retire soon after a 48-year career in fire service.
Officials reminded residents to avoid outdoor burning and properly dispose of smoking materials, as dry spring vegetation increases wildfire risk.
Firefighters remained on scene for over an hour to douse hotspots. No further flare-ups are expected, but authorities urged vigilance as conditions remain favorable for additional grass fires.
