Medford, OR – A major winter system is expected to hit the Oregon Cascades this weekend, bringing heavy snow, slick roads, and freezing overnight temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.

Snow showers are forecast to begin early Saturday, Oct. 25, increasing in intensity by afternoon and continuing through Sunday, Oct. 26, with rates near 0.5 inches per hour. The storm could deliver 12 to 18 inches of total accumulation across mountain passes and high-elevation areas above 4,500 feet.

According to the NWS, the combination of wet snow, slush, and refreezing overnight temperatures could make travel “dangerous and unpredictable,” particularly for drivers crossing Cascade highways. The agency also warned that accumulated snow and slush on sloped roads could make turns hazardous and that offroad terrain will face increased risk due to unstable snow cover.

Travelers are urged to check road conditions before heading out, carry emergency supplies, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall periods. Freezing conditions could persist overnight into Monday morning, keeping surfaces icy even after snow tapers off.
