Medford, OR – A winter weather advisory and flood watch are in effect Sunday, threatening road safety and travel across Southern Oregon. The advisory warns of heavy snow in the Oregon Cascades and flooding in low-lying areas due to excessive rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory includes highways 140, 62, and 138, with snowfall expected to total 8-12 inches by Sunday night. The heaviest snow is forecast between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m., with rates of up to one inch per hour. Wind gusts may reach 55 mph, potentially causing damage to trees and power lines. Meanwhile, the flood watch, active until 4 p.m., affects Rogue Valley and surrounding areas, where creeks and rivers may rise over their banks.
Residents and travelers should plan for hazardous conditions. Roads, including the Cascade highways, could be difficult or impassable at times. Drivers should reduce speeds, carry tire chains, and check road conditions at tripcheck.com. Those in flood-prone zones should avoid crossing water-covered roads and secure loose outdoor items.
The weather outlook for the week ahead includes periods of fog Monday, followed by partly sunny skies with highs near 44°F. Showers are likely by New Year’s Eve, continuing into New Year’s Day.
