Pendleton, Oregon – Extreme heat continues to grip Eastern Oregon as a prolonged heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach 99°F in Pendleton and surrounding areas. Travel along U.S. Route 395 and rural highways may become hazardous, particularly for vulnerable drivers and pets in parked vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, Monday’s scorching 97°F is only a precursor to Tuesday’s peak heat. The advisory covers the Eastern Columbia River Gorge, Umatilla County, and much of the lower Columbia Basin, where sun exposure and dehydration could result in serious health risks. Winds may gust up to 31 mph Monday night, but relief from the heat won’t arrive until late in the week.
Residents should limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay in air-conditioned environments, and check on elderly neighbors. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) urges workers to take shaded rest breaks and remain hydrated. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 9-1-1 immediately if symptoms appear.
Cities including Hermiston, The Dalles, and Sunnyside will feel similar conditions. Temperatures will remain high through Thursday, with only a slight dip expected midweek.
