Wind howls across open fields while low clouds race overhead as eastern Oregon faces a powerful Weather Alert. Gusts snap branches and rock vehicles, setting a tense tone for Christmas travel and the days ahead.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the foothills of the Blue Mountains, the Grande Ronde Valley, and Wallowa County. According to the National Weather Service, south winds of 30 to 40 mph are ongoing, with gusts reaching 65 mph. The strongest winds are expected through early afternoon.

Travel conditions are already difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Sudden crosswinds may push cars across lanes on exposed highways, including stretches of I-84 near Pendleton. Drivers should slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, and plan extra time.

Power outages are possible as saturated ground weakens tree roots. Falling limbs and debris could block roads with little warning. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and remain indoors if possible while winds peak.

Temperatures sit near the upper 30s this morning, keeping roads mostly wet for now. However, colder nights later this week raise the risk of black ice if moisture freezes after sunset. This pattern becomes more relevant as travelers return home Saturday, December 27.

To be fair, Pendleton avoids major snow this week. Still, snow levels drop nearby, and higher elevations could see wintry impacts. Winter is tightening its grip across the region, even as parts of the country remain unusually warm.

Conditions should gradually improve later today, but breezy weather lingers into the holiday. Stay alert. Check road conditions before leaving. Adjust plans if needed.
