Portland, OR – Drivers across Oregon are being urged to prepare today as forecasters warn that fast-moving snow squalls could develop this season, bringing sudden whiteouts and sharply deteriorating road conditions just as early holiday travel begins to increase. The bursts may affect routes from Portland to Salem, Bend, Pendleton, and mountain passes along I-5, I-84, and US-26.

Snow squalls typically last under an hour, but their rapid onset and severe visibility loss make them one of winter’s most dangerous hazards. Sudden whiteouts paired with flash-freezing pavement can instantly make highways slick, contributing to major pileups in past events along I-84 near the Columbia River Gorge and central Oregon passes. Officials emphasize that avoiding the road during a Snow Squall Warning is the safest option. Meteorologists often warn: “You don’t want to be on the road when it happens.”

If a squall hits while you’re already driving, experts recommend slowing down gradually, switching on hazard lights, and significantly increasing following distance. Drivers should stay in their lane, avoid sudden braking, and never stop in a travel lane where visibility may drop to nearly zero. Safe pull-offs—exits, rest areas, or parking lots—are the best places to wait for conditions to improve.

Oregonians heading out for errands, commutes, mountain recreation, or early holiday shopping should keep winter emergency kits in their vehicles, including blankets, water, chargers, scrapers, and traction materials such as sand or cat litter. Outdoor items should be secured as squalls may bring gusty winds.

Forecasters will continue monitoring the system throughout the afternoon, with additional statements possible.
