Medford, Oregon – Strong thunderstorms are set to return to Southern Oregon, bringing a heightened risk of lightning, gusty winds, and small hail from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday night. Klamath Falls, Lakeview, and areas near Crater Lake could experience damaging wind gusts topping 55 mph and locally heavy downpours as storms intensify.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, Tuesday’s main concern is dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, paired with sudden outflow winds between 40 and 55 mph. By Thursday, the risk rises for stronger, possibly severe thunderstorms capable of producing small hail—up to one inch—and even higher wind gusts up to 60 mph. Storm zones include highways 97 and 140, and residents from Chiloquin to Paisley should stay alert for changing conditions.

Travel may be impacted by sudden visibility drops and debris on roadways, especially east of the Cascades. Outdoor plans should be reevaluated, and anyone camping or recreating near Crater Lake or the Fremont-Winema National Forest should have a safety plan ready. When thunder roars, seek sturdy shelter immediately.

The thunderstorm risk remains elevated through Thursday night, and more watches or warnings could be issued. Stay tuned for the latest updates as this dynamic weather pattern evolves.
