Portland, OR – Extreme heat continues across western Oregon today, with highs reaching 97 to 102 degrees and the risk of heat-related illnesses climbing quickly for anyone outdoors. The National Weather Service warns the Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for the Portland/Vancouver metro, Willamette Valley, and Columbia River Gorge until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, overnight lows tonight will dip into the mid-60s north of Salem and low 60s south, marking the start of a cooling trend. By Wednesday, daytime highs in Portland are expected to reach a more manageable 85°F, with mostly sunny skies and lower overnight temperatures in the 60s.

Officials urge residents to drink water frequently, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors. For those without air conditioning, fans, shade, and limiting sun exposure remain key to avoiding heat exhaustion. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes, so never leave children or pets unattended.

While relief is on the horizon, Tuesday’s heat remains dangerous. Conditions are expected to stay cooler through the end of the week, with the next chance of rain arriving late Thursday night into Friday.
