Pendleton, Ore. – Eastern Oregon remains under an extreme heat warning as temperatures soar near 100°F Sunday and Monday, threatening health, travel, and utilities. Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, drink water, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers on I-84 near Pendleton may encounter haze that reduces visibility.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning will stay in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday, with highs above 95°F expected each afternoon. Heat index values could push conditions higher, creating risks for heat exhaustion or dehydration. Cooling relief arrives by Wednesday night, when rain chances increase.

Today will top out near 100°F with widespread haze. Winds remain light, offering little relief. Overnight lows dip into the mid-60s, keeping homes and roadways warm. Monday will stay hot with highs in the upper 90s, again raising health and fire risks across Umatilla County.

By Tuesday, partly sunny skies and slightly cooler air bring highs near 91°F. Clouds build Tuesday night, leading to scattered showers by Wednesday morning. A stronger chance of rainfall develops Wednesday evening, finally helping to break the extreme heat.

Officials recommend avoiding non-essential outdoor work until at least midweek, using cooling centers when available, and keeping pets indoors. Power companies caution that prolonged air conditioner use could strain grids during peak afternoon hours.

Heat advisories may continue until showers stabilize the region midweek. Residents should stay weather-aware and prepare for additional updates.
