Oregon – Windshields glaze over as headlights blur into halos across the southern Willamette Valley. Freezing fog has settled in thick this morning, clinging to roads, trees, and rooftops as temperatures hover near the freezing mark.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect through late morning, while an Air Stagnation Advisory continues until early Friday. Visibility has dropped to a quarter mile or less in dense pockets around Eugene, with surface temperatures ranging between 28 and 32 degrees. Thin layers of rime ice may form on exposed surfaces where fog is thickest.

Morning travel is impacted across Eugene and nearby communities including Springfield, Junction City, and Cottage Grove. Low visibility may make driving hazardous, especially along Highway 99, Beltline Road, and rural routes where fog pools without warning. Slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. To be fair, conditions can change quickly from block to block.

The air stagnation adds another concern. Light winds and limited air movement are trapping pollutants close to the ground. Sensitive groups, including those with asthma or heart conditions, may notice worsening symptoms. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Fog gradually thins late this morning as temperatures rise into the mid-40s. Sunshine becomes more common Thursday and Friday, though patchy fog may redevelop during the overnight and early morning hours. Air quality concerns persist through the end of the workweek until stronger winds return.

Winter weather may feel quiet right now, but these subtle hazards can be just as disruptive. Are you seeing icy patches or thick fog where you live?
