Medford, Ore. – Unseasonably hot weather will grip southern Oregon this week, with Medford expected to hit 95 degrees by Tuesday afternoon. Drivers along Interstate 5 should prepare for heat-related hazards, including pavement expansion and drowsy driving risks.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will climb into the mid-90s Tuesday and Wednesday before easing slightly by Thursday. The stretch of unseasonable warmth could create elevated fire danger across Jackson County and surrounding foothills, especially during the afternoon when winds increase.
Medford will feel the brunt of the heat, but surrounding communities such as Ashland, Eagle Point, and Central Point can also expect highs well above normal for mid-September. Outdoor workers and residents without air conditioning should limit time outside during peak heating between 2 and 6 p.m. Hydration and cooling breaks are strongly recommended.
Travelers on I-5 and Highway 62 should plan accordingly, as vehicles may overheat faster in prolonged sunlight. ODOT warns drivers to check coolant levels and carry extra water.
Relief appears by Friday as clouds return and temperatures settle closer to seasonal averages in the mid-80s. A slight chance of weekend showers could bring some much-needed moisture.
More weather advisories may be issued if fire danger escalates. Stay alert to NWS updates and local emergency notices.
