Bend, Oregon – Travel across the Cascade passes in Oregon and Washington is becoming increasingly dangerous as a powerful winter storm continues to drop heavy snow through Saturday, sharply reducing visibility and creating hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the east slopes of the Oregon Cascades until Saturday morning, with snow totals ranging from 6 to 12 inches. Areas including Sisters, Sunriver, La Pine, and Camp Sherman are seeing periods of heavy snowfall, making mountain travel risky and, at times, nearly impossible.
Farther north, the upper slopes of the eastern Washington Cascades are under a Winter Storm Warning through Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service reports snowfall totals between 10 and 16 inches near Easton and Roslyn, with heavy rates contributing to slick roads and near whiteout conditions at higher elevations.
Transportation officials urge drivers to delay non-essential travel, especially across mountain passes. Those who must travel are advised to carry chains, extra clothing, food, water, and emergency supplies in case of becoming stranded. Downed trees and power lines remain a concern as snow accumulates.
Warnings remain in effect through Saturday, and additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase or travel conditions worsen.
