Portland, Oregon – Travel across Oregon’s Cascade passes is expected to become dangerous starting early Tuesday as a prolonged period of heavy mountain snow moves into the region, bringing rapidly deteriorating road conditions and potential closures through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, elevations above 2,500 feet will see persistent snowfall from early Tuesday through Wednesday, with the heaviest periods expected Tuesday evening and again Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. Snow totals at pass level are projected to range from one to two feet during the event window, creating hazardous winter driving conditions.

Government Camp along Highway 26, Santiam Pass on Highway 20, and Willamette Pass on Highway 58 are all expected to be heavily impacted. Steep grades, limited visibility, and accumulating snow could lead to chain requirements, delays, and temporary closures. ODOT urges drivers to avoid unnecessary travel over the Cascades and to check TripCheck before departure.

Snowfall rates may become intense at times, reducing visibility and making road conditions change quickly. Emergency officials recommend carrying traction devices, winter survival gear, and ensuring vehicles are fully fueled before attempting mountain travel.

The snow threat eases late Wednesday night, though lingering impacts may continue into Thursday morning. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve, and drivers should continue monitoring official updates before heading into the mountains.
