Medford, OR – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Medford says cold overnight temperatures could bring frost and freezing conditions to parts of southern Oregon and northern California early Thursday morning, October 16, followed by a shift to wetter weather this weekend.

According to the NWS, Shasta and Scott Valleys in California, along with colder parts of the Rogue, Illinois, and Applegate Valleys in Oregon, are most at risk for frost formation. Temperatures are expected to drop near or below freezing in some areas under clear skies. Residents are urged to protect sensitive vegetation, livestock, and outdoor plumbing from potential damage.

After the chilly start, forecasters expect a brief warmup heading into Friday and Saturday, with afternoon highs trending slightly above seasonal averages. A new Pacific storm system is then forecast to arrive late Saturday into Monday, bringing widespread rainfall—especially along the Oregon-California border region—and snow levels near 6,000 to 7,000 feet.

Meteorologists note that while precipitation may be heavy at times, significant winter impacts are not expected, as most snow will remain in higher elevations.
