Oregon – The air is thick with mist across Eugene this morning, and the sound of steady rain echoes through the valley — a calm beginning to what could become an increasingly active stretch of December weather. Umbrellas are a must through the weekend, but next week’s rain could bring much more than damp commutes.
The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Hydrologic Outlook, warning that a strong atmospheric river will push into southwest Washington and northwest Oregon from December 8–10. The system could bring several inches of rain, rapid river rises, and possible urban and small-stream flooding. Soils are already saturated from repeated storms, increasing the potential for landslides in steep terrain and flooding along the Coast Range and Willamette Valley rivers.
For now, the next few days remain soggy but manageable. Rain continues through Sunday, with highs near 55°F and south winds gusting up to 25 mph. Roads may see slick spots and standing water, particularly along I-5 and Highway 126. Plan for slower travel and low visibility during heavier showers.
By Monday, rainfall intensity ramps up as the first front from the atmospheric river arrives. Widespread rain could persist into Wednesday, with forecasters tracking river levels closely. Even where flooding stays minor, runoff could overwhelm storm drains and create localized street flooding.
After Wednesday, models suggest a brief lull before another system late next week — keeping Oregon locked in an active, early-winter pattern as holiday travel season ramps up.
