EUGENE, Ore. – Dangerous heat grips western Oregon this week, with temperatures near 100°F expected through Tuesday and limited overnight cooling. Residents face health risks, especially along the I-5 corridor near Eugene, where heat stress may build quickly for outdoor workers and travelers.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday, covering much of the Willamette Valley. Highs will hit 95–98°F Monday and Tuesday before dropping slightly by midweek. Light winds will offer little relief, and overnight lows in the mid-60s won’t allow homes to cool.
Local health officials urge residents to avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, drink extra water, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Lane County officials warn that cooling centers may be needed, while Oregon DOT advises caution for drivers on I-5 and Highway 126, where stalled vehicles and overheated engines often rise during prolonged heat events.
Air quality alerts also remain posted, with stagnant air trapping pollutants. Sensitive groups, including children and seniors, should minimize outdoor exposure. Pet owners are reminded never to leave animals in parked cars, even briefly.
Relief will be gradual, with highs sliding back into the 80s by Wednesday. More comfortable mornings and evenings return late week.
