Portland, OR – Drivers crossing the Oregon Cascades could face snow-covered highways as early as 4 a.m. Wednesday, with up to 8 inches expected above 4,500 feet and visibility dropping during heavier bursts by the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday for the Cascades of Lane County and the Cascades of Marion and Linn counties. Snow totals between 4 and 8 inches are likely at pass level, including Santiam Pass, Willamette Pass, McKenzie Pass and Tombstone Summit.
Moderate to heavy snowfall at times may cut visibility below a half-mile, especially midday Wednesday. Snow-covered pavement and icy bridges could create hazardous travel on Highways 20, 22 and 126. Chain restrictions are possible, particularly at Santiam and Willamette passes, where elevation keeps temperatures cold enough for steady accumulation.
Travelers should carry tire chains, blankets, water and extra food, and check TripCheck.com or call 511 before departure for updated road conditions. Conditions are expected to improve late Wednesday night, but additional mountain snow showers could prompt extended advisories if colder air lingers into Thursday.
