Portland, Oregon – Drivers heading over Cascade mountain passes could face snow-covered highways as early as 4 a.m. Wednesday, with up to 11 inches expected to pile up before the day ends.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday for the Cascades of Marion, Linn and Lane counties. Snow will mainly impact elevations above 4,500 feet, including Santiam Pass, Willamette Pass, McKenzie Pass and Santiam Junction.
Forecasters expect total accumulations between 8 and 11 inches, with periods of moderate to heavy snowfall reducing visibility and creating slick pavement. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, increasing the risk of spinouts during the morning and evening travel windows. Tombstone Summit, Breitenbush Springs and areas near Waldo Lake are also included in the advisory zone.
ODOT warns that chain restrictions are likely, and conditions may change quickly throughout the day. Motorists should carry tire chains, blankets, water and a flashlight, and check TripCheck.com or call 511 before traveling.
Snowfall will taper late Wednesday night, but hazardous travel could persist into early Thursday if temperatures remain near freezing.
