Pendleton, Oregon – Drivers crossing the Northern Blue Mountains overnight face visibility dropping to a half mile or less, with freezing fog coating roads and bridges in a thin layer of ice through 10 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect for the Northern Blue Mountains of Oregon, including Tollgate and Meacham, until 10 a.m. PST Wednesday. The advisory warns that visibility may fall to one-half mile or lower as moisture freezes on contact with cold surfaces.
The greatest risk stretches along higher elevations and exposed roadways, where untreated surfaces can turn slick quickly. Sections of Interstate 84 near Meacham and surrounding mountain routes could see patchy ice, especially on overpasses and shaded curves. Reduced visibility may also make it difficult for drivers to spot slowing traffic or wildlife.
Motorists should slow down immediately, switch on low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Allow extra travel time for the Wednesday morning commute and avoid sudden braking. School buses and early freight traffic could encounter delays in fog-prone corridors.
Conditions should gradually improve after 10 a.m. as temperatures rise and fog lifts. Additional advisories could be issued if dense fog redevelops overnight.
