Pendleton, OR – Heavy snow and strong winds are expected across the Blue Mountains and Cascades from Wednesday night into Thursday, potentially disrupting post-Christmas travel. A Winter Storm Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory have been issued for affected areas, with hazardous conditions likely on mountain passes.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall could reach up to 18 inches in higher elevations of the Washington Cascades and between 6 to 8 inches along the east slopes of Oregon’s Cascades. Winds could gust up to 50 mph, particularly in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, making driving difficult for high-profile vehicles and potentially causing isolated power outages.
Travelers are urged to monitor road conditions on key routes like Interstate 84, especially near Pendleton and mountain passes. Drivers should prepare for snow-packed roads, limited visibility, and delays. The NWS recommends carrying emergency supplies, including blankets and extra food, when traveling through these areas.
The active weather pattern is forecast to continue through the week. Thursday will bring rain to lower elevations, with highs around 50°F in Pendleton. Rain showers will persist into Friday, accompanied by gusty winds. By Saturday, cooler air may bring a mix of rain and snow across parts of eastern Oregon, with lows dipping to the upper 30s.
Residents should secure outdoor objects, such as holiday decorations, and stay informed through local weather updates. For more information on weather alerts and travel advisories, visit weather.gov/pendleton.
