Medford, Ore. – Thunderstorms are expected to sweep across southern Oregon on Tuesday, bringing a mix of gusty winds, lightning and even the potential for new wildfire starts. Conditions could quickly turn hazardous for anyone outdoors, particularly in higher terrain and rural counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the greatest risk lies across Siskiyou, Modoc, Klamath, Lake, Jackson, Josephine and eastern Douglas counties. Storms may develop during the day Tuesday and linger into the overnight hours. Along with lightning, forecasters warn of hail and strong wind gusts capable of downing branches or disrupting travel.
Residents planning outdoor activities are urged to reconsider or prepare to move indoors if storms approach. Exposed areas such as mountain summits, lakes and wide open fields can be especially dangerous. Emergency officials advise seeking shelter inside a sturdy building or vehicle, and waiting at least 30 minutes after thunder ends before resuming activities.
The storm threat continues through Tuesday night, with the chance of additional advisories if conditions intensify.
