Medford, Oregon – Extreme heat will peak Tuesday in southern Oregon, with Medford forecast to hit 103°F and travel on I-5 posing health risks midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday, as a prolonged heatwave continues to smother the Rogue Valley and surrounding regions. Highs between 101°F and 110°F are expected across western Siskiyou County and Jackson County, including Medford, Ashland, Grants Pass, and surrounding towns.

Temperatures will remain above 100°F through at least Saturday, with little overnight cooling. Tuesday will mark one of the most dangerous days, especially for anyone traveling or working outdoors between noon and 6 p.m. Warm overnight lows in the upper 60s will also strain air conditioning systems and increase the risk of heat-related illness.

Highways like I-5 and Route 99 could be especially hazardous due to vehicle overheating or drowsy driving from heat fatigue. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors or pets. Car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in minutes.

Cooling centers remain open in downtown Medford, Ashland, and Yreka, and local power companies are asking residents to limit electricity usage from 3 to 7 p.m. each day to prevent rolling brownouts.

Temperatures may slightly ease after Wednesday, but heat will remain a factor into the weekend. NWS expects the warning to downgrade to a Heat Advisory by late Wednesday, though highs will still hover near 100°F.
