Oregon – Travelers heading through Oregon’s mountain passes today should prepare for significant snowfall and challenging road conditions, especially near Santiam Pass. A series of storm systems is moving through the area, bringing waves of light to moderate snow through Friday, which could severely impact travel.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Pendleton, snowfall levels will reach 5,000 to 6,000 feet today, with heavy accumulations at higher elevations. The highest snowfall amounts, expected to reach eight inches, are likely above 5,000 feet, particularly on routes that traverse the Cascades. These conditions could lead to hazardous driving on roads like Oregon Route 22 near Santiam Pass and other mountainous areas. Drivers are advised to carry tire chains and allow extra travel time.
Today’s forecast in the nearby Pendleton area includes overcast skies with a high near 57 degrees, dropping to around 40 tonight with rain expected overnight. Showers will continue through the weekend, with temperatures falling into the 30s by Saturday night. On Sunday, cooler conditions will bring a partly cloudy sky, with a low of 32 degrees overnight. Rain is likely to return Monday, with additional chances on Tuesday.
For those venturing into higher elevations, the first substantial snow of the season is expected to limit visibility and create slick conditions. Safety officials urge residents and visitors to prepare for possible delays and monitor updates, as more snowfall is forecast into next week.
