Coos Bay, OR – The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recurring phone scam involving fake warrant calls. Scammers have been impersonating Sheriff’s Office personnel, claiming their targets have active arrest warrants and demanding immediate payment to “resolve” the issue.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, these fraudsters often request payment through untraceable methods, including gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. Authorities stress that legitimate deputies will never call to demand money or threaten arrest for unpaid warrants.
“If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and do not engage,” the department advised in a recent statement. Officials recommend blocking the number and contacting the Coos County Sheriff’s Office directly at (541) 396-7800 to verify any legitimate concerns. Residents can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint.
The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to stay alert and share the warning with family and friends to prevent further victims. “Together, we can stop these criminals,” the department said.
