Klamath Falls, Oregon – Thunderstorms packing abundant lightning and gusty outflow winds are set to sweep across southern Oregon from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a Red Flag Warning for the Klamath Basin, Southern Oregon Cascades, and the Fremont-Winema National Forest. Fire officials warn that dry fuels and scattered storms could lead to numerous new fire starts and rapidly changing conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the warning covers eastern Klamath County, as well as all of Lake and western Harney Counties. After Tuesday’s warning, a Fire Weather Watch extends from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, with concern focused on areas north of a Crater Lake to Summer Lake line. Thunderstorms could become more widespread, bringing both wet and dry lightning—an especially dangerous mix for wildfire ignition.

Travelers and residents should expect sudden wind gusts up to 50 mph and rapidly shifting smoke. Local roads—including Highway 97, Highway 140, and forest access routes—may see limited visibility or closures if fire starts occur. Authorities urge everyone to sign up for county emergency alerts, avoid all open flames and spark-causing activities, and pack a “go kit” with essentials, medications, and documents in case evacuation is needed.

Officials stress that these warnings don’t mean fires are active but highlight the high potential for rapid spread if any ignition occurs. Fire restrictions are in place across the region. Stay tuned for updates, as additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
