Medford, Oregon – A Red Flag Warning is in effect Sunday from 2 to 11 p.m. for parts of Siskiyou County, California, as well as Klamath and Lake counties in southern Oregon, as dry fuels and abundant lightning threaten to ignite new wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, scattered thunderstorms are expected across the warned area, producing frequent lightning and erratic winds. With extremely dry brush and grass in place, these storms could trigger multiple new fire starts—especially near communities like Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Yreka, and Bly.
Officials urge residents to postpone outdoor activities, avoid using any ignition sources, and seek shelter indoors when thunder is heard. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” the NWS advises. Outdoor recreation, camping, and yard work should be delayed until the warning ends.
Travelers along highways including U.S. 97, Oregon 140, and California 89 should stay alert. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 11 p.m. Sunday. Additional alerts may be issued if storm activity persists into the evening.
