Pendleton, Oregon – Fire risk is set to spike across central and eastern Oregon as well as south central Washington starting Thursday afternoon, with rapid fire spread possible through Friday night due to gusty winds and bone-dry air.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday until 10 p.m. Friday for the Lower Columbia Basin, the Columbia River Gorge, John Day Valley, Warm Springs Reservation, and the Central Mountains of Oregon. West winds of 15–25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph, are expected—especially through Cascade mountain gaps.

Communities including Hermiston, Pendleton, The Dalles, Warm Springs, and John Day will see relative humidity drop as low as 10%, creating critical fire weather. Any spark—whether from a vehicle, machinery, or open flame—could quickly become uncontrollable. Local agencies strongly urge everyone to avoid outdoor burning and any activity that could start a fire. Secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and have emergency plans ready.

This alert follows several early season brush fires in the region and comes as part of a broader trend toward hotter, drier summers across the Pacific Northwest. Officials warn that conditions may intensify Friday as winds increase.

The Red Flag Warning will stay in place through 10 p.m. Friday, with updates possible if conditions worsen.
