Pendleton, OR – Travelers in the Ochoco-John Day Highlands should brace for challenging conditions as significant snowfall continues into Saturday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, forecasting up to 6 inches of snow above 4,500 feet and gusty winds reaching 35 mph.

According to the NWS, snow began accumulating late Thursday and is expected to persist until early Saturday, creating hazardous road conditions and low visibility. Those traveling on local roads or highways, such as Highway 395 or US-26, should exercise extreme caution.

Preparation Tips and Travel Safety

Drivers should plan for delays and carry winter emergency kits, including blankets, flashlights, and extra food and water. The Oregon Department of Transportation recommends checking road conditions at TripCheck.com or dialing 511 before starting any journey.

Looking ahead, the weather system will bring colder temperatures through the weekend, with highs in the low 30s and overnight lows dropping into the teens. Gusty winds may lead to drifting snow, exacerbating already difficult driving conditions.
