Cottage Grove, OR – Authorities are intensifying the search for an elderly man who vanished earlier this week in southern Lane County.

According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, 80-year-old Herbert Elroy Stout of Cottage Grove was last seen the morning of August 8 at his residence in the 31600 block of Raisor Road. Deputies say Stout may have walked away from the area or possibly hitchhiked. Search teams have notified surrounding law enforcement agencies and are urging residents to check security footage for possible sightings.

Investigators are asking homeowners with cameras along Raisor Road, London Road, Weyerhaeuser Road, Cottage Grove Reservoir Road, and South 6th Street to review recordings from August 8 between 9 a.m. and the evening. Stout would likely be walking with a cane.

Stout is described as a white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing about 135 pounds, with gray hair in a shoulder-length ponytail, blue eyes, and a white beard. He was last seen wearing glasses, a maroon shirt, and light blue jeans. Authorities say Stout has dementia, a seizure disorder, and had recently mentioned traveling to California.

Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue teams, along with deputies, remain on the ground in the Cottage Grove area. Anyone with information about Stout’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at 541-682-4141.
