Pendleton, OR – Residents near the Northern Blue Mountains should prepare for hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages overnight. A high wind warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for the foothills, including the cities of Pendleton, Athena, and Pilot Rock.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), south to southeast winds of 35 to 50 mph with gusts reaching up to 70 mph will continue through early Tuesday. The strongest winds are expected along Interstate 84 and Highway 11, with travel conditions becoming treacherous for high-profile vehicles. Falling tree limbs and debris may also pose dangers.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure outdoor objects. Power outages may occur, so residents are urged to charge devices and prepare emergency supplies.
Rain will accompany the high winds overnight, with temperatures hovering in the low 40s. By Christmas Day, conditions will calm, bringing a brief respite with mostly cloudy skies and highs near 43 degrees. However, rain will return Wednesday night and persist through the weekend, with daytime highs in the low 50s and nighttime lows in the upper 30s.
The NWS warns that wet conditions combined with strong winds may lead to localized flooding or additional travel delays later this week. Stay updated by checking local forecasts and road conditions regularly.
