Pendleton, Oregon – Afternoon thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding and debris flows Friday across parts of Central Oregon, especially near wildfire burn scars in the Ochoco-John Day Highlands.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for areas surrounding the Falls, Crazy Creek, Rail Ridge, and Wiley Flat burn scars. Thunderstorms developing through the afternoon and evening could produce intense rainfall in short bursts.

Cities under threat include Prairie City, Seneca, Paulina, and Brothers. Heavy rain over scorched terrain increases the risk of fast-moving water, rockslides, and sudden mudflows, especially in narrow valleys and near steep slopes. Residents, hikers, and drivers in these areas are urged to avoid drainages and be ready to move to higher ground if warnings are issued.

Emergency managers recommend having an evacuation route, monitoring NOAA weather radio, and staying away from canyons or dry creek beds that may quickly flood. Even brief rainfall events could create dangerous runoff in burn scar zones.

Flash Flood Watches remain in effect through this evening, and additional warnings may follow depending on storm activity.
