Pendleton, Ore. – Eastern Oregon faces an elevated wildfire threat Friday as thunderstorms bring abundant lightning and gusty winds to the region. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. through 11 p.m., with the greatest risk stretching across the John Day Valley, Central and Western Blue Mountains, and the Warm Springs Reservation.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, scattered thunderstorms could generate wind gusts up to 50 mph, which, combined with dry fuels, may lead to rapid fire growth. Officials warn that a Red Flag Warning is in place due to the heightened potential for dangerous fire conditions.

Communities across Grant County, Union County, and surrounding mountain areas should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Drivers are urged to secure trailer chains to prevent sparks and avoid pulling off into dry grass. Residents should refrain from outdoor burning and remain alert for potential evacuation notices.

Fire managers stress that any lightning strike could spark a new fire and spread quickly under Friday’s weather pattern. Conditions are expected to improve by late evening, but additional watches or warnings may follow if thunderstorms persist through the weekend.
