Pendleton, Oregon – Fire danger will rise sharply across central Oregon on Thursday as dry winds and single-digit humidity sweep into the John Day Valley, Southern Blue Mountains, and Warm Springs Reservation. Residents and outdoor workers are urged to avoid burning and to remain alert as these conditions could cause wildfires to ignite and spread quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Fire Weather Watch goes into effect Thursday afternoon and will remain active through Thursday evening. Northwest winds are expected to reach 10 to 15 mph, while relative humidity may dip as low as 10 percent—creating prime conditions for rapid fire growth in fire weather zones OR696, OR698, and OR703.

The most at-risk areas include the John Day Valley, Warm Springs Reservation, and the higher terrain of the Southern Blue Mountains. Local fire officials stress that outdoor burning should be postponed, and any spark from vehicles, tools, or campfires could trigger a fast-moving wildfire. Ranchers, hikers, and travelers along US-26, OR-19, and the Warm Springs Highway should take extra precautions, including having emergency kits and fire extinguishers ready.

This heightened fire risk is expected to last into Thursday evening, but additional advisories or a Red Flag Warning could be issued if conditions worsen. Residents should monitor local alerts and prepare for sudden fire restrictions.
