Boise, Idaho – Explosive fire conditions are expected across southeastern Oregon this afternoon as thunderstorms with abundant lightning and erratic wind gusts up to 55 mph move through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 3 p.m. MDT (2 p.m. PDT) to 10 p.m. MDT (9 p.m. PDT) for Fire Weather Zones 672 (Southern Grasslands), 673 (Central Canyonlands), and 674 (Northwestern Vale BLM). Scattered lightning strikes combined with dry fuels and high winds create ideal conditions for new fire starts and rapid spread.
Fire crews are on high alert in Malheur County, particularly near BLM lands south of Vale and west toward the Owyhee Uplands. Winds may shift suddenly, posing risks for both firefighters and nearby communities. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged during this window.
Drivers along Highway 20 and remote areas in the Jordan Valley region should stay weather-aware, as visibility and road conditions could rapidly deteriorate if a fire starts.
The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through the evening. Additional advisories may follow if storms persist into Tuesday.
