Eugene, OR – Dangerous heat will grip much of western Oregon starting Friday, with the National Weather Service issuing an Extreme Heat Warning lasting through 5 a.m. Tuesday. Highs are expected to soar into the upper 90s and low 100s, with Saturday and Sunday marking the peak of the heat wave.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, overnight lows will remain in the 60s and 70s, limiting relief for residents across the Willamette Valley, Columbia River Gorge, and greater Portland–Vancouver metro. The agency also issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday afternoon and evening, citing low humidity and gusty winds that could rapidly spread wildfires in southern portions of the valley.
The combination of excessive heat and dry fuels will strain emergency crews. Officials urge residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially during afternoon hours. Hydration, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and limiting exposure to direct sun are critical safety steps. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes, and pets should never be left inside vehicles.
The heat wave is expected to ease slightly by Tuesday, but additional advisories may follow if triple-digit temperatures persist.
