Eugene, OR – Residents in Lane County are encouraged to safely dispose of expired or unused medications this Saturday during a community Drug Take Back event hosted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the collection will take place Saturday, October 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lane County Public Works Customer Service Center, located at 3050 N. Delta Highway in Eugene.

Accepted items include prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, ointments, lotions, pet medications, and liquid medicines in sealed or leakproof containers. Needles, thermometers, inhalers, and medical waste will not be accepted.

Officials say the no-questions-asked drop-off aims to prevent unsafe disposal methods such as flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in household trash, which can lead to environmental contamination and drug misuse.

In 2021, Lane County collected more than 918 pounds of unused medications through similar events. For those unable to attend, a permanent drug drop box is available at the Lane County Courthouse Central Reception lobby, open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
