Salem, OR – Rifle deer season opens across Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 4, with hunters reminded to prepare for key deadlines and safety requirements.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), deer tags must be purchased by the end of Friday, Oct. 3. Hunters with a Sports Pac can redeem their voucher, but the tag will not automatically appear in accounts without action.
ODFW also emphasized the use of its MyODFW app, which allows digital tagging. Hunters are encouraged to log in before entering areas with poor reception, as the app may require reauthentication.
In addition, cougar and fall bear tags must be secured by Friday’s deadline. “Most are taken when hunters are pursuing deer or elk,” ODFW noted, urging hunters not to miss the cutoff.
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) check stations will be in operation Oct. 4–6 in Baker City, Celilo Park, Elgin, and Prineville. All hunters transporting harvested deer or elk are required to stop at designated stations, marked by highway signage.
ODFW also reminded hunters to follow the four fundamental rules of firearm safety as the season begins.
