Astoria, OR – Dangerous marine conditions are expected along the Oregon coast this morning as the National Weather Service in Portland continues a Hazardous Seas Warning through 8 a.m. PDT Monday, followed by a Small Craft Advisory until 8 p.m. this evening.
According to the NWS, seas are building to 15–17 feet at 11 to 13 seconds, with northwest winds of 10 to 15 knots and gusts up to 20 knots. After midmorning, conditions will gradually improve but remain rough, with waves of 9–13 feet persisting through the evening.
The warnings apply to all coastal waters from Cape Shoalwater, Washington, to Florence, Oregon, including the Columbia River Bar, where ebb currents up to 5.5 knots will combine with strong seas to produce especially hazardous bar crossings.
Forecasters warn that very steep waves could capsize or damage small vessels, particularly near the bar and exposed headlands. Recreational boaters and smaller commercial operators are urged to remain in port until seas subside later tonight.
Conditions are expected to ease overnight, with calmer seas forecast by early Tuesday. Mariners can monitor real-time marine updates at weather.gov/Portland.
