Portland, Oregon – Beachgoers along the Oregon coast face a serious safety threat midweek as powerful sneaker waves are expected to impact coastal areas, creating dangerous and unpredictable conditions along the shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a high threat of sneaker waves is in place from Wednesday through Friday along the entire Oregon coast. Sneaker waves can surge much farther up the beach than normal waves, often without warning, and have the potential to knock people off their feet or sweep them into the cold Pacific Ocean.
These waves are especially dangerous during periods of otherwise calm-looking surf, when visitors may let their guard down. The risk extends to anyone near the surf zone, including those walking close to the waterline, photographing waves, or exploring tide pools. Heavy logs and driftwood near the shore can also be lifted or rolled by incoming waves, increasing the risk of serious injury.
Officials urge beach visitors to stay well back from the water, keep children and pets close, and avoid climbing on rocks, jetties, or large logs near the surf. Wearing waterproof footwear and maintaining constant awareness of wave conditions is critical during sneaker wave events.
The heightened risk is expected to persist through Friday before easing. Forecasters say additional beach hazard statements may be issued as conditions evolve, and residents and visitors are encouraged to check updates before heading to the coast.
