Bandon, Oregon – A light earthquake measuring magnitude 3.1 struck beneath the Pacific Ocean late Monday, about 202 kilometers west of Bandon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred around 2:27 p.m. local time (9:27 p.m. UTC) at a depth of roughly 10 kilometers.

According to the USGS, the offshore tremor was part of a seismically active zone near the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where the Juan de Fuca and North American plates meet. No damage or injuries have been reported, and no tsunami warning was issued.

Residents along the southern Oregon coast, including Bandon, Coos Bay, and Port Orford, were unlikely to feel the shaking due to the distance offshore. However, emergency officials remind coastal residents that even small offshore quakes are a reminder of the region’s tectonic volatility.

Experts say such minor quakes are routine but help release pressure along the fault system. Authorities continue to monitor for any aftershocks or changes in seismic activity through Tuesday.

Warnings remain minimal, but Oregon’s Office of Emergency Management advises residents to review earthquake safety plans and ensure emergency kits are up to date.
