Oregon Coast Alert: Suspicious Backpack Found at Sunset Beach

Clatsop County, OR – A suspicious backpack discovered Tuesday morning at a public bathroom in Sunset Beach State Recreation Site prompted an explosives investigation, according to Oregon State Police.

The incident began around 10:21 a.m. on September 16, 2025, when Oregon State Parks staff alerted authorities to the unattended bag. Oregon State Police located the item and requested bomb technicians from both Oregon State Police and the Salem Police Department, who rendered the device safe. No injuries were reported.

According to police, officers and state park staff conducted additional searches in the area but did not locate any other suspicious devices. Authorities emphasized that while the incident is believed to be isolated, the public should remain cautious. Officials urged residents and visitors to report any suspicious objects by calling 911 and to keep a safe distance from potential threats.

The investigation remains ongoing. Oregon State Police encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators at *OSP (*677) or (800) 442-0776, referencing case number SP25406805.

Multiple agencies supported the response, including the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department, Oregon Parks Department, Warrenton Fire Department, and Astoria Fire Department.
