Portland, OR – As Oregon heads into Black Friday weekend, weather officials are urging Portland-area homeowners to complete winter preparations before a stretch of colder nighttime temperatures moves across the Willamette Valley.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), La Niña conditions may bring more variable early-winter weather to Oregon this season, with increased chances for overnight freezes even after mild daytime highs. Portland, Salem, and Hillsboro may see temperatures drop into the upper 20s late Friday into Saturday, while areas east of the Cascades—including Bend, Redmond, and La Grande—could see temperatures fall into the teens. These shifts elevate the risk of frozen pipes, roof ice, and heating-system strain statewide.

Home maintenance specialists recommend prioritizing insulating exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawl spaces, and unheated exterior walls common throughout Oregon homes. Clearing gutters and downspouts is essential—Oregon’s frequent rainfall can quickly freeze overnight, creating ice buildup and early-season ice dams.

Energy experts advise residents to seal drafty windows and doors, verify attic insulation levels, and test heating systems before the colder December pattern arrives. Portland Fire & Rescue officials also urge homeowners to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, noting an uptick in heating-related calls after Thanksgiving.

NWS encourages residents in the Columbia Gorge, Central Oregon, and foothill communities to prepare for stronger winds accompanying the freeze risk. Homeowners using wood stoves or pellet stoves should check venting and clear chimney pathways before the cold settles in over the weekend.

Emergency managers recommend checking on elderly neighbors or anyone who may need help winterizing their homes during the Black Friday travel period.
